Do I need to be a native speaker?
No. You don’t need to be a native English speaker to take the course. You should have a strong command of English and be confident enough to teach it. -
What are the entry requirements?
You need to have completed high school and achieved at least 70% for English. A degree is not required, but you’ll need competent computer literacy. -
How is the course structured?
It’s a 120-hour, full-time, face-to-face course run over four weeks in Cape Town. Expect 20–30 additional hours of self-study. You’ll cover teaching methods, skills and systems, plus classroom observation and teaching practice. -
Can I work while doing the course?
No. The course is intensive and requires your full-time commitment. It is not compatible with a part-time job or other major responsibilities. -
Can I work abroad with this certificate?
Yes—depending on your background. If you have a degree, it’s easier to get placements. Some countries accept TEFL teachers without degrees, including Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain. Employers value experience, so it helps to build some before applying. -
Does ELC help with job placement?
We don’t offer job placements, but you’ll receive guidance and advice towards the end of the course on how and where to apply for teaching positions.
