Cambridge Exam Preparation

Success in a Cambridge English Qualification can afford you better job opportunities and access to many universities. Each Cambridge English Qualification is based on a level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The two Cambridge Exam Preparation courses at ELC are aimed at preparing students for the Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge B2 First. The courses will give you a deep insight into each exam’s scoring criteria and structure. You will gain an understanding of the test questions you can expect to encounter, with plenty of practice tests, so you feel confident on exam day. You will also learn crucial time management strategies while honing your skills in the four core skills that will be tested in the exam - speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

B2 First (FCE)

Suitable for students at a B2 CEFR level, the B2 First Cambridge English qualification is widely accepted by businesses and educational institutions internationally. Our B2 First Preparation course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to approach the exam with confidence. As the exam tests your ability to give opinions and present arguments in both spoken and written English, you will receive both theoretical and practical training in these areas.

The exam is comprised of four papers, with the speaking component of the B2 First exam is conducted in person with examiners, as well as another candidate in order to mimic a real-life setting. Therefore students will receive intensive practice in communicating with native and non-native speakers. In addition, you will broaden your grammar and lexicon.

Cambridge English exam reading sections require specific skills. For instance, the texts may contain 'distractors' – words that appear in both the text and questions. They may mislead you into selecting the incorrect answer.

As Cambridge exams test General English, you will be required to demonstrate knowledge of English used in daily life, such as the news, TV shows, podcasts, common road signs, as well as common collocations in daily conversations.

Knowing how to plan your writing is an important skill in the Cambridge exam. Our course trains students in effective essay planning strategies. You will also learn how to approach the exam's different writing tasks successfully.

General English Exams

It can be difficult to decide whether to follow the Cambridge exam route - this 'suite' of exams falls under 'General English' exams - or another English qualification. Your choice should be determined by your objectives. Do you want to study abroad at an English-speaking university? Then either IELTS or TOEFL is a good option. Both exams are accepted by many universities in the UK, USA, Canada and many other countries if you achieve the required score. IELTS is the qualification of choice in British and Australian universities, whereas TOEFL is more common in the USA.

By contrast, Cambridge exams are not as widely accepted by universities and educational institutions - and then only if they are high-level Cambridge exams such as the CAE. However, if you're looking for a job abroad, a Cambridge Exam qualification is viewed favourably by many companies. It is also a gateway to immigration to certain countries. If you are planning to study or apply for a job overseas, it is advisable to contact the establishment to find out about their English exam requirements.
