In 2024, the UCT English Language Centre (ELC) launched two new courses aimed at supporting students with professional and academic goals: Business English and Academic English. Both programmes form part of the Centre’s standard morning schedule and reflect its commitment to providing high-quality, purpose-driven English language education.

The Business English course is designed for working professionals across sectors such as Oil & Gas, Finance, and Telecommunications. The curriculum focuses on essential workplace communication skills, including business writing, presentations, meetings, negotiations, and professional networking. The course is available both in-person and online, with options for group or private study.

The Academic English course prepares students for university-level study and meets the University of Cape Town’s English language proficiency requirements. The programme includes academic writing, reading and research techniques, critical thinking, and presentation skills. It is aimed at students intending to apply to UCT or other higher education institutions.

Both courses require a B2 (Upper Intermediate) level of English or higher.

These additions to ELC’s curriculum reflect the Centre’s broader focus on aligning English language education with real-world applications in academic and professional contexts.
