Private Lessons

Students who have specific language learning requirements may choose to have one-to-one lessons with a teacher.  Your teacher will first carry out a detailed needs analysis to identify the context in which you need to use English, and the areas of the language where you need support and training.  Through this process you and your teacher will agree on the learning outcomes you will work towards together on your course.

The lessons can be scheduled to fit your timetable, and can be combined with other courses.  Private Lessons may suit students in full time work or academic study who require support with tasks like giving a work presentation or writing a thesis.  They can also be very useful to students with low levels of English to kick-start their language learning journey.

Everyone has a different learning style.  For example there are visual learners, auditory learners, and people who 'learn by doing'.  Part of our job as teachers is to recognise your learning style and adapt our teaching to it.

Learner-centred teaching recognises that different people learn in different ways, and that the role of the teacher is to facilitate the learning process according to your individual needs and abilities.

We train our students to be autonomous learners, taking responsibility and control of their own learning, both in terms of what they learn and how they learn it.

How can I learn English quickly?

Private English lessons give you the chance to focus on the areas of English you find most challenging and become confident in your language skills, quickly.  The content is agreed between you and your teacher – so you learn exactly what you need.  Private lessons are perfect for students who need to reach their language goals faster.

The most important factor in how quickly you learn is your own motivation and determination to succeed.  Speaking English outside the classroom, watching videos and reading content in English, and practicing writing will all help you progress more quickly.

Scheduling Private Lessons

Private lessons permit a degree of flexibility for both the teacher and the student.  When scheduling private lessons the following considerations apply:

Private lessons are timetabled according to the availability of our teaching staff and the student's own schedule.  Lessons can only be timetabled after 13.00 SAST.

Teachers are assigned at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate requests for specific teachers.

Lessons must be taken in 2 x 50-minute blocks

A minimum of seven days' notice is required to make arrangements for the private lessons.

Lessons may be rescheduled for another time within the same week depending on the teacher’s availability. At least 24-hours' notice is required to reschedule a lesson.

If a lesson is missed or cancelled with less than 24-hours' notice the lesson is forfeited and no refund will be offered.

All lessons must be taken within the agreed course period and cannot be rolled over to a subsequent period. For example, if a student books 100 private lessons over 52 weeks, all the lessons must be taken within the 52-week period.
