University of Cape Town Upper Campus

First of all, congratulations for taking the first step towards your tertiary education in South Africa. You will absolutely love it and create memories to last a lifetime!

South Africa is a great choice to further your education, namely because it is the homeland of the University of Cape Town, ranked the top university in South Africa and the continent. The second best is the University of Witwatersrand, followed by Stellenbosch University. About 60% of the international students in South Africa are from SADC countries, 28% from the rest of Africa and 22% from elsewhere in the world.

The application process

Here are the steps to take after making the decision to further your education in South Africa as an international student.

Firstly, you need to obtain at least 6.5 in the IELTS test. ELC offers an IELTS exam preparation course which can help in this regard. Being able to study in an all-English environment starts by surrounding yourself with the same environment in terms of reading, writing and speaking in English. Therefore, the IELTS test prepares you to use English for Academic Purposes at university level.

Secondly, you have to send copies of your recent certificates to both HESA/MBIT  and SAQA, which are institutions that issue certificates stating that you are eligible to continue your studies in South African universities by evaluating your recent qualification. The process includes filling out an online application and paying the evaluation fee. Ensure that you translate (if they are in your home language) and CERTIFY copies of your qualifications. This means that they need a stamp to prove that they are authentic. Then, you need to mail your documents to the addresses provided on the websites and wait for the result.

At the same time, you need to start your online application with the university of your choice and contact the desired faculty for further information on the specific requirements and application process. Normally, the deadline for international students is by the end of July. So, you need to start your application early and submit it as soon as possible. However, you still have until the end of August or September, depending on the university/faculty, to submit the rest of your documents and results.

Now you are ready to start your application at your chosen university in South Africa.
